2. 25th International Conference of the Society for Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration

Toronto, Ontario, Canada
May 6th to May 8th, 2005.

On Saturday May 7th, from 4:15-5:30, Shaindl Diamond and Patricia Anik Poulin will be conducting a workshop on "Working with Marginalized Identities: A Radical, Humanistic, and Integrative Approach."

Practitioners who are aware of the impact of multiple sources of oppression (e.g. racism, ageism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, classism) can better support individuals whose social locations exacerbate the effect of early neglect and trauma. In this workshop, participants will be invited to look at how multiple parts of identity intersect and play out for different people. In addition, the role of integrating various ways of healing when working with individuals and communities that hold world views about healing that may differ from the traditional Eurocentric perspectives will be examined.

5. Outreach Success!

The Emotional Release Process Workshop, facilitated by Chris Wright on Sunday April 10, 2005, was a great success. The program was essentially an introduction to deep feeling process work and included demonstrations. There were 20 non-IPA'ers in attendance.

Takoma Park Metaphysical Chapel, where the workshop took place, promotes emotional release work as part of necessary and healthy Spirituality. The Senior Minister, Rev. Jim Webb, was grateful for the promotion of both the event and the Chapel, and witnessed many chapel and some non-chapel people benefiting from this work.

IPA information, including past newsletters and Spring Retreat flyers, was available for attendees and other local presenters to take. Hopefully, this will yield wonderful results for all concerned.

"It was delightful to have 25 people, ranging in age from 16 to over 65 and from diverse cultures, participating in emotional processing and primal release. It was a group that brought much personal compassion, which along with effective facilitating tools, provided a heartfelt experience for all," said Denise Kline, IPA Board member in attendance.

Joe Dunn deserves much appreciation for acting as contact person and liaison, following-up as needed, providing and distributing flyers. He was supported in this by Bill Whitesell, Leonard Rosenbaum, Gene Long, and Chris Wright.

Bill, Joe, and Denise were also on hand to help facilitate with newcomers, and answer questions about primal literature and events. Several attendees expressed interest in joining Bill's peer primal group.

Well done, Outreachers!

6. Rick Benson on A&E

On Monday March 14, Rick and his Center were in a segment of the powerful new series "Intervention" on A&E. The program examines the problem of addiction, not only for those addicted, but for family members and friends as well. The "intervention" is a last resort attempt to help those trapped in a variety of addictions. Professional interventionists recommend the treatment center, support family and friends during the intervention, and act as liaison between the addicted person/family and the selected center.

Rick was featured in a segment dealing with a man's gambling addiction.

Rick, a long time IPA member and convention attendee, is Director of Algamus Therapeutic Communities. Founded in 1992 on Anna Maria Island in Florida, the center provides residential treatment and transitional living for compulsive gamblers. Gambling counselors, medical, psychiatric and spiritual advisors are available to assist the resident in an individualized program that includes the opportunity to look at the underlying emotional component of their addiction. Family treatment and intervention services are also available.

7. Training Graduates

8. Inquiry into Psychiatry 2005 - Report in Progress

In April, historic hearings for psychiatric survivors were held at Toronto City Hall. Individuals with histories of neglect, trauma and difficulties of living, who were treated with psychiatric drugs and/or electroshock, had an opportunity to speak about their experiences. The reports from the panelists who listened to psychiatric survivors' stories will be submitted to the Toronto Board of Health and other governmental organizations, and will be available on the web (URL to be published once the reports are ready).

For information about the process and results of the inquiry, contact the Coalition Against Psychiatric Abuse at capa@oise.utoronto.ca. You may also contact directly Patricia Anik Poulin, core member of the coalition, at ppoulin@oise.utoronto.ca.
